FAQ

Common questions

Why is my GFCI outlet not working, or another outlet is dead?
GFCI receptacles often protect other outlets downstream on the same circuit, so one that has tripped can shut off several. Resetting it is the first step, and if it will not reset, there may be a fault or a worn-out device. We can find which.
Can you replace two-prong outlets with three-prong ones?
Only if there is a ground to connect to. If there is not, the code-recognized options include running a new grounded circuit or using GFCI protection with a label stating there is no equipment ground. We will explain which works for your wiring.
Do dimmers work with any bulb?
No. LED and CFL bulbs need compatible dimmers, and some bulbs are not dimmable at all. We choose the dimmer based on the actual fixtures.
Is replacing an outlet a DIY job?
We do not recommend it for most homeowners. Hidden problems such as old aluminum, brittle insulation, or shared neutrals are common and not always obvious, and a wrong connection can cause overheating.
More about receptacles, switches & devices

Receptacles and switches are often the first sign that wiring needs attention. A loose plug, a warm cover plate, a switch that crackles or a cracked outlet are not cosmetic problems. Contacts wear out, connections loosen over decades, and older devices were not designed for the loads we plug in today.

Replacement devices also give us a chance to improve protection. GFCI devices guard against ground faults, which is the kind of fault that can shock a person, and are required in places such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoors. AFCI protection detects arcing faults that can start fires, and is required on many living-area circuits. Tamper-resistant receptacles are required in most new work and are especially useful where children are present.

We replace and add devices across the Twin Cities, from a single worn outlet to a whole-house update during a remodel. In older homes, we often find ungrounded two-prong outlets, and we will go over what can be done about them, which ranges from running a ground to adding GFCI protection that is clearly labeled as having no equipment ground.

When you need it

  • Plugs fall out of loose receptacles, or the faceplate is warm or discolored.
  • You have two-prong outlets and want to plug in three-prong equipment without adapters.
  • A GFCI outlet will not reset, or a bathroom or kitchen outlet has never had GFCI protection.
  • A switch buzzes, flickers, feels hot or does not reliably turn the light on and off.
  • You want dimmers, smart switches, timers or occupancy sensors in a room.
  • A room does not have enough outlets and extension cords are in constant use.
  • You need USB receptacles, outdoor weather-resistant outlets or a receptacle in a floor, island or countertop.

Our process

  1. Walk through

We list the devices you want replaced or added and check the condition of the wiring behind them.

  2. Test

We test existing receptacles for grounding, polarity and GFCI function to see what is actually wrong.

  3. Replace and add

Devices are replaced, new ones are wired in and connections are tightened to specification.

  4. Verify

Every device is tested before we leave, and we explain anything that needs more work.

More questions

Can you add outlets without tearing up the walls?
Often we can. Depending on the construction and access from a basement, attic or adjacent wall, we can fish cable with minimal opening. Where we cannot, we explain what patching is needed.
