More about EV Charger Installation
Level 1 charging, which uses a standard 120V outlet, adds only a few miles of range per hour and is slow for most drivers. Level 2 charging uses a 240V circuit and is the usual choice for home. It needs a dedicated circuit, wiring suited to continuous load and a charger mounted where you can reach your car's port.
Because an EV charger can run for hours at a stretch, the circuit is treated as a continuous load and sized with that in mind. Before we install anything we check whether your panel and service have capacity for it. If they do not, we explain the options, which may include a load management device, a panel replacement or a service upgrade.
In the Twin Cities, most installs are in attached garages, some of them unheated, so we pay attention to cold-weather ratings, cable routing and a convenient mounting location. We pull the permit and the work is inspected, and we can install either a hardwired charger or a receptacle for a plug-in unit, depending on the equipment.
When you need it
- You are buying or leasing an EV or plug-in hybrid and want charging at home.
- You currently charge from a standard outlet and the car is not fully charged by morning.
- You are building or renovating a garage and want a charger circuit in place for later.
- You park outdoors or in a detached garage and need a run to a driveway or outbuilding.
- Your panel is full or your service is small and you need to know whether a charger will fit.
- You have a charger you bought and need it installed on a proper circuit.
- You want to be ready for a second vehicle or a higher-power charger down the road.
