FAQ

Common questions

Do you handle the permits and inspections?
Yes. We pull the required electrical permits for our work and schedule the inspections. Depending on the location, inspections are done by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry or by the city where it administers its own electrical inspections, such as St. Paul.
When should I bring an electrician into a new build?
As early as the plans are available. Panel location, service size and circuit needs affect framing and other trades, so catching them before construction is much easier than changing them afterward. At the latest, we need to be involved before framing is ready for rough-in.
Can you wire for an EV charger, generator or solar that I might add later?
Yes. Roughing in conduit, panel space and service capacity during construction is usually far easier than retrofitting. What makes sense depends on the home, the equipment you may add and the service size, so we would go over it during plan review.
Do you work on both residential and commercial new construction?
Yes. We work for homeowners, builders, general contractors, developers and commercial clients across the Twin Cities metro. The scope and the equipment differ, but the process of permitting, rough-in, inspection and final is the same.
More about new construction electrical

New construction electrical is the full electrical system of a building installed from scratch: the service and panel, branch circuits, lighting, receptacles, and the dedicated circuits for equipment and appliances. Done right, it is planned around the drawings and the trades working alongside it, so the wiring ends up where the finished space needs it.

The work happens in stages. Rough-in goes in while the framing is open, trim-out follows once drywall and finishes are done, and inspections happen at the required points along the way. We pull the required permits, and the work is inspected by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry or by the local jurisdiction where the city runs its own electrical inspections, such as St. Paul.

Prime Time Electric MN, LLC is a licensed Minnesota electrical contractor (License #EA807704) working on both residential and commercial projects. Everything is installed to the National Electrical Code as adopted in Minnesota.

When you need it

  • You are building a new single-family home, townhome or multi-unit residential building
  • You are adding onto an existing building and the addition needs its own circuits or a larger service
  • You are building a detached garage, workshop or outbuilding that needs power run out to it
  • A commercial space is being built out from a shell for a new tenant
  • A ground-up commercial or mixed-use building needs a complete electrical system
  • A gut renovation takes a building down to the studs and the wiring will be replaced throughout
  • You are planning for EV charging, a generator or future solar and want the capacity roughed in from the start

What’s included, in detail

Plan review and layout

Dedicated and equipment circuits

Circuits for ranges, dryers, HVAC, water heaters, EV chargers and commercial equipment are installed as specified.

Who it’s for

For homeowners & home builders

If you are building a custom home or an addition, the electrical plan is easiest to get right before the walls are closed. We will talk through where you actually use power, from kitchen counters and the mudroom to a heated garage or a future EV charger, and rough in the circuits and panel capacity to match. Our approach is to keep you informed at each stage so there are no surprises at drywall. Production and custom builders get the same approach, with work scheduled around your crews.

For general contractors & developers

As a licensed subcontractor, we work from your drawings and fit our rough-in and trim-out into your trade sequence. We pull the required permits for our scope and coordinate inspections so electrical is not what holds up the next phase. We communicate directly about schedule changes, open questions and anything in the field that differs from the plans. For multi-unit and repeat work around the Twin Cities, the aim is a relationship where you can hand us a scope and trust it is being managed.

For commercial projects

Commercial work, from tenant build-outs to ground-up buildings, brings its own demands: higher loads, three-phase service in some buildings, lighting layouts, and tenant-specific equipment. We install to the National Electrical Code as adopted in Minnesota and work with the inspecting authority, which may be the state or the local city. Our team combines licensed electrical expertise with project management, so scope, schedule and field coordination are handled together. We will walk through your plans and tell you plainly what we see.

Our process

  1. Review the plans

We go over the drawings and scope with you, flag questions early, and agree on what the electrical system needs to include.

  2. Permit and schedule

We pull the permits and sequence our work around framing, mechanical trades and the rest of your build schedule.

  3. Rough-in and inspection

Wiring and boxes go in while walls are open, and the rough-in is inspected before the walls are closed.

  4. Trim-out and final

Devices, fixtures and panels are completed, circuits are tested, and the final inspection is scheduled.

More questions

How is new construction electrical priced?
It depends on the size of the building, the number of circuits and fixtures, the service size, the specialty equipment and the schedule. We price from your plans and scope instead of quoting a number without seeing the project.
