FAQ

Common questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips when a circuit is overloaded, when there is a short circuit or ground fault, or occasionally when the breaker itself is worn. Because the cause matters, we test the circuit instead of just replacing the breaker. Repeated tripping is a protective response, so it should not be ignored or bypassed.
An outlet has stopped working. Is it dangerous?
Often the cause is a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, a failed device or a loose connection. Loose connections can generate heat, so it is worth having it looked at, particularly if you notice warmth, discoloration or a burning smell. If you do, turn off the circuit at the panel and have it checked.
Can you repair things that were wired by someone else?
Yes. We look at the existing work, tell you what is wrong, and correct it. If we find work that is unsafe or does not meet code, we will explain it and give you your options.
Do repairs need a permit?
Minor repairs, such as replacing a like-for-like device, typically do not. Larger repairs, such as new circuits, panel work or substantial rewiring, generally do. We pull permits where they are required and the work is inspected.
More about troubleshooting & repairs

Electrical troubleshooting is the process of tracing a symptom, such as a breaker that keeps tripping, an outlet that has no power or lights that flicker, back to its source. The cause might be a worn device, a loose connection, a damaged cable, an overloaded circuit or a problem at the panel or service. Replacing parts without finding the cause often means the problem comes back.

We start by understanding what you are seeing and when it happens, then test the circuits to isolate the fault. Once we know the cause, we explain it plainly and recommend a repair, whether that is replacing a device or correcting wiring. Repairs that require a permit get one, and the work is inspected by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry or the local jurisdiction.

Minnesota adds its own stresses to electrical systems, including cold garages and exterior outlets, moisture in basements, and aging wiring in older Minneapolis and St. Paul housing. Prime Time Electric MN, LLC is a licensed contractor (License #EA807704) serving homes and businesses throughout the Twin Cities.

When you need it

  • A breaker trips repeatedly or will not stay reset
  • Outlets or switches have stopped working, or only work some of the time
  • Lights flicker, dim when appliances start, or buzz
  • You notice a burning smell, warm or discolored outlets or switch plates, or crackling sounds, and have turned off the affected circuit
  • A GFCI or AFCI device keeps tripping without an obvious cause
  • Part of a building has lost power while the rest still works
  • An addition, renovation or earlier electrical work left something not working as it should

Who it’s for

For homeowners

A dead outlet or a breaker that keeps tripping can be a minor device failure or a sign of something more serious, and it is hard to tell which without testing. We find the cause, explain it in plain terms, and show you the options before work begins. If we see other issues while we are there, such as a loose panel connection or an ungrounded outlet, we will mention them so you can decide what to do. Please do not open panels or work on wiring yourself, because that is a job for a licensed electrician.

For property managers

Repeat electrical complaints from tenants cost time, and swapping devices without finding the cause tends to bring the same call back. We trace the fault to its source, repair it properly, and tell you plainly what was done so you can keep your maintenance records straight. If a unit shows signs of a larger issue, like overloaded circuits or aging panels, we will say so and discuss options. We work with owners and managers of Twin Cities properties and aim for clear, responsive communication.

For businesses

In a commercial space, an electrical fault can interrupt operations, so we aim to diagnose it carefully and repair it correctly the first time. We work on lighting, receptacles, equipment circuits, panels and the problems that come with tenant changes or added equipment. We can plan the work around your hours where possible and keep you informed of what is being done and why. Repairs are made to code, permitted when required and inspected by the state or the local jurisdiction.

Our process

  1. Describe the problem

You tell us what is happening and when, and we ask the questions that help narrow down the cause.

  2. Test and isolate

We test the circuit and its devices to find the fault, and check connected areas for related issues.

  3. Explain and agree on repair

We explain what we found and the options, and you decide how to proceed before we do the work.

  4. Repair and verify

We make the repair, pull a permit where one is required, and test to confirm the problem is resolved.

More questions

How much does a repair cost?
It depends on the cause, how accessible the wiring is, the parts involved and how long the diagnosis takes. We explain what we found and what the repair involves before we proceed, so you can make the decision with the full picture.
