FAQ

Common questions

Do I have to fix everything on an inspection report?
Not necessarily. Reports often mix real hazards with minor notes and items that were acceptable when the house was built. We help you sort them, though buyers, lenders or insurers may require specific corrections regardless.
Is old wiring a code violation?
Not automatically. Older installations that met the rules of their day are often allowed to stay as they are. Violations tend to arise when conditions are unsafe, when work was done improperly, or when you alter the system and trigger current requirements.
What if the unsafe work was done without a permit?
We can assess it, correct what needs correcting and pull the permit so the work is inspected. This is better than leaving it hidden, since unpermitted work can complicate a sale or an insurance claim.
Will an inspector sign off on the corrections?
Where the work requires a permit, it is inspected by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry or the local jurisdiction, such as St. Paul. We schedule the inspection and handle any follow-up.
More about electrical code corrections

Electrical code violations come from several places: wiring done decades ago to an earlier standard, a past remodel that cut corners, a handyman or homeowner project done without a permit, or an inspector's note on a new job. Some are cosmetic, others are real hazards, and a report rarely tells you which is which. A line like "improper wiring at panel" can mean a ten-minute fix or a day of work.

Prime Time Electric MN, LLC, a licensed Minnesota electrical contractor, corrects code violations for homeowners, sellers, buyers, property managers and businesses across the Twin Cities. We read the report, confirm what is actually wrong in the field, and fix the problem so that it meets the National Electrical Code as adopted in Minnesota. Where the work requires a permit, we pull it and arrange the inspection.

We do not recommend electrical work beyond what the situation requires. If an item is a safety issue, we say so plainly. If it is a recommendation with no urgency, we say that too, so you can prioritize.

When you need it

  • A home inspection, insurance inspection or lender review lists electrical defects
  • An electrical inspector failed earlier work and requires corrections
  • You have found DIY or unpermitted electrical work from a prior owner
  • Open junction boxes, exposed splices, or cables run without protection
  • Outlets lack grounding or GFCI protection where current practice calls for it
  • Breakers have been double-tapped or a panel was modified improperly
  • A property or business has a notice from a city, landlord or insurer to correct electrical conditions

Our process

  1. Review the report

Send us the inspection report, notice or list, and we go through it item by item.

  2. Confirm on site

We examine the conditions, separate real hazards from low-priority notes, and explain our findings.

  3. Correct the work

We make the repairs to code, with permits where required and no shortcuts.

  4. Inspect and document

The work is inspected and we give you the record you need for the file.

More questions

How much will corrections cost?
It depends on how many items there are, how accessible the wiring is and whether walls or ceilings need to be opened. Once we have looked at the conditions, we explain the scope so you can decide with full information.
