More about recessed lighting
Recessed lighting sits flush in the ceiling, so the fixtures themselves disappear and the light stays in the room. Modern LED downlights are shallow, efficient and available in a range of color temperatures, which makes them workable in places where older, deep cans were not.
The ceiling is where the real decisions are. In a Minnesota house, the space above is usually insulated against cold winters, so fixtures must be rated for contact with insulation, and the ceiling must be sealed so that holes do not become air leaks. We choose fixtures with the right rating for the ceiling type and for rooms with moisture, such as showers.
Layout matters as much as hardware. Spacing, distance from walls and the number of fixtures affect whether a room looks evenly lit or spotted with bright circles. We lay it out on the ceiling before cutting anything, then put the whole group on dimmers if you want them. For pendants, porch lights and landscape fixtures, see interior and exterior lighting.
When you need it
- A kitchen or hallway relies on one center fixture and still feels dark at the edges.
- You want lighting that does not compete with a low ceiling or a decorative feature.
- A basement renovation needs lighting that fits under ducts and joists.
- You are replacing old, deep recessed cans that leak air, run hot or take bulbs that are no longer made.
- You want to wash a wall or highlight artwork, shelving or a fireplace.
- Bathroom or shower areas need a fixture rated for damp or wet locations.
- You are adding a room or finishing a ceiling and want to plan lighting before it is closed.
What’s included, in detail
Fixture spacing and placement marked out to avoid joists, ducts and plumbing.
Housings for open framing, or remodel-style fixtures that install through a hole in finished drywall.
Fixtures rated for insulation contact, and for damp or wet areas where needed.
New cable runs and switch legs, with the load kept within what the circuit supports.
Dimmers matched to LED drivers, and consistent color temperature across the room.
Clean cutouts, trim rings seated tight to the ceiling, and drywall patching coordinated if needed.
Our process
- Check the ceiling
We look at framing direction, insulation, attic access and what is in the way.
- Mark the layout
We mark fixture positions with you so you can see the pattern before any holes are cut.
- Cut and wire
Openings are cut, cable is pulled and fixtures are connected to the switching.
- Trim and test
Trims are installed, dimming is tested and any fixture that is off is corrected.
