FAQ

Common questions

Can I buy my own fixtures?
Yes, and many clients do. We ask that you check the fixture rating, such as damp or wet location, and its weight with us before purchase, and we are glad to advise on what suits the location.
Why do outdoor fixtures fail so often here?
Moisture and temperature swings. Fixtures that are not rated for wet locations, or that are installed without proper sealing, tend to collect water, corrode and fail within a few seasons.
Can you add an outdoor light where there is no switch or power?
Usually. We can extend a circuit from the nearest suitable point, route cable through the structure and add a switch, sensor or photocell. The practical routes depend on the house.
Is landscape lighting hardwired?
Most systems run on low voltage through a transformer that plugs into or is wired to a protected outdoor power source. We install the transformer and run the cabling, and set it on a timer or photocell.
More about interior & exterior lighting

Inside the house, fixture work includes pendants over islands, chandeliers, vanity bars, under-cabinet lighting, closet lights and ceiling-mounted fixtures. Each has its own mounting and wiring needs. A heavy chandelier needs a box rated for its weight; a vanity light has to sit at the right height for the mirror; under-cabinet lighting needs power that is hidden and switched where you will reach it.

Outdoors, the demands are different. Fixtures must be rated for wet locations, mounted on boxes sealed against moisture, and chosen to handle freeze and thaw, snow and ice. Entries, garages, decks, steps and walkways are the usual places, and in a Twin Cities winter, with dark afternoons and ice underfoot, lighting them is a safety matter and not only a decorative one.

We also set up control. Photocells turn lights on at dusk, timers manage schedules, motion sensors cover side yards and garages, and smart switches or dimmers handle the rest. We ask how you actually use each area and set the controls up around that.

When you need it

  • Your entry, steps or driveway are dark in the evening, particularly in winter when ice builds up.
  • Existing porch or garage lights are corroded, filled with water or no longer working.
  • You want pendants over a kitchen island, a dining table or a stair landing.
  • A bathroom vanity light is too dim or at the wrong height for a mirror.
  • You need under-cabinet or closet lighting with a switch that works and no visible cords.
  • You want motion or dusk-to-dawn lighting for security around the house, garage or side yard.
  • You are adding deck, patio or landscape lighting and need a safe, weather-protected power source.

Our process

  1. Review the plan

We go over where you want light, what fixtures you have chosen and what wiring already exists.

  2. Prepare the wiring

New cable, boxes and supports go in, or existing ones are checked and corrected.

  3. Mount and connect

Fixtures are mounted, sealed outdoors where needed, and connected to their controls.

  4. Check at night

For exterior work we check aiming and coverage after dark so you see the real result.

More questions

Do you handle ceiling fan installations?
Yes. A fan needs a box and support rated for a fan, not just a fixture, and we confirm or replace the box as part of the work.
