FAQ

Common questions

Do I need an electrician to change a light fixture?
Swapping like for like can look simple, but hidden problems are common: old brittle wiring, missing grounds, boxes that are not rated for the fixture's weight. Having a licensed electrician do it means those issues get spotted and handled properly.
Will LED bulbs work with my existing dimmers?
Often not well. LED fixtures and bulbs need dimmers designed for low-wattage loads, and mismatches cause flicker, buzzing or limited range. We pair the dimmer to the fixture.
Can you add lighting where there is no existing wiring?
Usually yes. Depending on access, we can fish new cable through walls and ceilings or open small sections to run it, and we plan the least invasive route.
What is the difference between your two lighting pages?
Recessed lighting covers ceiling cans and slim downlights. Interior and exterior lighting covers decorative and functional fixtures such as pendants, vanity lights, porch lights and landscape lighting. Many projects use both.
More about lighting installation & upgrades

Lighting projects range from swapping a single fixture to rewiring an entire floor for recessed cans, under-cabinet strips and dimmable zones. The fixtures are the part you see; the wiring, switching and circuit loading behind them determine whether the result works well and stays safe.

We approach lighting by room and by purpose. Kitchens and workspaces need bright, even task light. Living areas do better with layers and dimming. Outdoors, exterior light fixtures face Minnesota winters, snow load and wet conditions, so the rating and mounting matter as much as the style.

This section covers the two main kinds of work we do, with a page for each: recessed lighting, and interior and exterior fixture installation. If you are unsure which applies, a job often includes both, and we plan them together so the switching and circuits make sense.

When you need it

  • A room is dim, uneven or full of shadows, and a single ceiling fixture is not doing the job.
  • You are replacing older fixtures and want to switch to LED or add dimming.
  • Switches are in awkward spots, or you need three-way control at stairs and long hallways.
  • Exterior areas such as the driveway, entry, deck or back steps are dark or unsafe in winter.
  • You are remodeling and want to plan lighting before drywall closes the ceiling.
  • Existing fixtures flicker, run hot, buzz or have brittle, discolored wiring at the box.
  • You want lighting on a timer, photocell or smart control instead of relying on someone to flip a switch.

Our process

  1. Discuss the space

We look at the room, ceiling access and how you use it before suggesting a layout.

  2. Plan the wiring

We settle fixture count, switching and circuits, and confirm what you have bought or want to buy.

  3. Install

Wiring and boxes first, then fixtures and controls once surfaces are ready.

  4. Test and adjust

We check dimming, switching and aiming, and fix anything that does not behave as planned.
